I’m judging baked goods at this year’s Utah State Fair, and in preparation, I’m eating delicious treats around Salt Lake *cue the “Rocky” theme song*
At the fair I’ll be judging homemade candy, which is hard to come by. So I set out to track down some of the best handmade sweets around Salt Lake.
Newly opened in South Salt Lake, this family-owned company was started by Alfonso and Alejandra Porras over 25 years ago. They grew from a small family trailer at farmers markets to their current 36,000-square-foot facility.
This candy company has been crafting confections in Utah since the 1800s. Maybe you recognize their nostalgic suckers (do you say lollipops or suckers?). I’ve seen them at Original Pancake House in Sugar House and Sir Walter Candy Co.
Katie Masterson and Steve Hatch created a successful chocolate business in the Avenues, combining Steve’s family candy-making tradition with Katie’s pastry expertise. You may have seen them on TLC’s “The Little Chocolatiers.”
You may recognize JulieAnn Caramels from your local grocery store or even HSN. These caramels taste just like the ones wrapped in wax paper that you get from your neighbors around the holidays.
Felicia “Fee” Hanson started Sweet Hazel as a sweets business and it has since blossomed into a vegan cafe and bakery. She still makes yummy plant-based candy under her second company Break Free Candy.
🍬Do you dabble in candy making? Consider entering the competition. Entries are due by Wednesday, Sept. 3.
