Your Daily Guide

Hey, Salt Lake! We’re in the final stretch of our spring membership campaign, so we’ll be real with you: Making a daily podcast and newsletter that keeps you informed takes a lot of work. We rely on people like you who choose to support it.

And to be extra transparent: We need 141 new members to make our goal. It’s not an arbitrary number, it’s what we need to stay afloat.

If you find value in City Cast Salt Lake, we’re asking you to chip in $10 a month or $100 a year to keep this thing running.

Help us stick around for a good time and a long time

DHS Finalizes SLC Property Deal

The Department of Homeland Security has now taken ownership of all the land under a large warehouse in Salt Lake City, and intends to convert it to an Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention center. With the full property now federally owned, it is tax-exempt, meaning nearby property owners could see a slight bump in their taxes. [KSL]

SLC Seeks First Poet Laureate

Salt Lake City is accepting applications for its first-ever poet laureate, a paid, three-year role that will serve as a cultural ambassador and lead public poetry programming across the city. Applications are open now through May 17. [Salt Lake City Arts Council]

Moose vs. Ticks

Moose in Utah’s Wasatch Mountains are declining in part due to heavy tick infestations, made worse by warmer winters that have allowed tick populations to grow. Wildlife officials are now working to find ways to protect the moose population. [Salt Lake Tribune 🔒]
