What Salt Lake's Talking About

Unpaid Labor Fuels Other Side Academy’s Rapid Growth

The Other Side Academy, which has been praised for tackling addiction and homelessness, faces new scrutiny as rapid taxpayer-funded expansion collides with allegations of unpaid labor, strict confrontational practices, and refusal of mental health medications. Both former students and experts warn of traumatic consequences for students. The nonprofit's leadership defends its intense, peer-led model as transformative. [Salt Lake Tribune, KUER]

Park City Council Approved 18% Pay Raise

In response to public criticism, the Park City Council will now reduce previously proposed salary increases. Instead of doubling pay, councilmembers and the mayor will receive an 18% raise, aligning with data provided by city staff. The new salaries take effect in the 2027 fiscal year. [KPCW]

2 Salt Lake Staples Shutting Their Doors

Craft by Proper, a beloved Sugar House beer bar, closes Saturday. They’re hosting a final party from 4 p.m. to 1 a.m. with a DJ set. Market Street Grill’s downtown location is ending nearly 50 years of service in the community (the Cottonwood Heights and South Jordan locations will stay open). [Salt Lake Tribune]

A Salt Laker's Guide to Midway

Swiss flags hanging in Midway.

Midway loves Switzerland. (Terina Ria/City Cast Salt Lake)

Craving a Euro summer without the Euro price ticket? We have just the spot for you: Midway. There’s no better way to describe this town than quaint and cozy, especially now, as the trees on the hillside have already started changing color.

Swiss Days

Midway’s annual Swiss Days happens every Labor Day weekend. With plenty of booths to shop, food to eat, and performances to see — you won’t wanna miss it!

Dandelion Gelato

Visit the sister store of The Pizza Yard because, really, what goes better with pizza than gelato? They keep things simple with only a few flavors but each is so tasty.

Produce and goods in a refrigerated section of the Ballerina Farm Store.

Some goodies at the Ballerina Farm Store. (Terina Ria/City Cast Salt Lake)

Ballerina Farm Store

Despite being a certified raw milk hater, I had to visit Ballerina Farm to see what the hype was about. I love specialty food stores so I thought it was really cute and a great place to grab a gift for someone (especially if that someone wants to start making sourdough from scratch).

Lola’s Street Kitchen

A local fave for yummy chicken sandwiches, gyros, and burgers. Sit on the patio for people watching and taking in the views.

Kringle’s Midway

A visit to a Hallmark-movie-worthy town wouldn’t be complete without a stop at Kringle’s Midway, a year-round Christmas store that even looks like a gingerbread house.
