| | | If your holiday plans included lighting fireworks in your cul-de-sac, you may need a backup plan. Because of extreme wildfire danger, Utah has temporarily banned personal fireworks statewide through July 5. Here’s what you should know. | - Rules may vary: The governor’s order lets cities designate approved areas for personal fireworks. Every city in Salt Lake County has banned personal fireworks while others are allowing fireworks in limited locations. Before you light a fuse, check your city’s rules. [ABC 4]
- Not everyone’s on board: Rep. Matt MacPherson, R-West Valley, who also owns PyroCrate Fireworks, says the statewide restrictions could bankrupt small businesses and argues the ban will be difficult to enforce. He and several other legislators plan to urge cities to continue allowing personal fireworks in designated areas. [KSL]
- See something, say something. Listen, nobody wants to be a tattletale, but we also don’t want to see our neighborhoods burn down. If you see someone lighting illegal fireworks or doing something that could spark a wildfire, call the non-emergency line (801-799-3000 for Salt Lake City and Sandy, 801-840-4000 for the rest of Salt Lake County). Save 911 for active fires. [Salt Lake County]
- What about Pioneer Day? State officials will reassess matters before deciding whether similar restrictions are needed for the July 24 state holiday.
- What’s keeping the state forester up at night? The likelihood that fire seasons like this are our new normal. Last week, Utah saw 18 new fires in a 24-hour period. [City Cast Salt Lake 🎧]

[Morningstar, University of Utah Health] | | Redefining 'Family' in Salt Lake City | The Salt Lake City Council is considering updating its definition of "family" to give residents more flexibility in their housing situations.
