Your Daily Guide

Happy Friday! If you’ve traveled at all this summer, I bet you haven’t had an airport experience like the one in Salt Lake. The spacious bathrooms, clean lounges, close proximity to the city, food that isn’t marked up … it's a master class.

That’s why I’m pumped to tell you about this week's episode of City Cast’s national podcast “Your City Could Be Better”. Our CEO David Plotz interviewed airport enthusiast Scott Keyes about what makes an airport great. They got into airport accessibility and affordability, and highlighted amenities that make an airport feel truly representative of its city. Check it out.

The nation's eyes are on the preliminary hearing for Tyler Robinson, the 23-year-old man accused of fatally shooting conservative activist Charlie Kirk. Prosecutors spent the week presenting evidence in Provo, building their case with the aim of taking Robinson to trial.

  • What’s on the table? Robinson faces several charges including aggravated murder, which in Utah is eligible for the death penalty. Even before a suspect was identified, Gov. Spencer Cox was calling for capital punishment. [City Cast Salt Lake 🎧]
  • What the fourth district judge heard: Over the course of the week, testimony centered on state witnesses, unreleased campus evidence, DNA evidence, and a former romantic partner interview. Judge Tony Graf said he’s working to balance transparency with the interest of justice. [AP, KUER]
  • Notable political figures like Donald Trump Jr. and Erika Kirk, Charlie Kirk’s widow and CEO of Turning Point USA, were present during the hearing this week. [Salt Lake Tribune]
  • Takeaways: In the era of social media, finding impartial jurors could be challenging. It also forces Utah into the spotlight, where efforts to repeal the death penalty were gaining momentum a few years ago. [City Cast Salt Lake 🎧]
  • What happens next? If the judge finds probable cause, Robinson will enter a plea. We are not yet at the trial phase. [Salt Lake Tribune]

What Salt Lake's Talking About

Logan Gets a Target

Two years after the announcement, residents will be able to enjoy the thrill of back-to-school shopping at Target. The new store will be a part of mixed-use development and will include 312 housing units. It will open on July 26. [Salt Lake Tribune]

Utah Football’s Potential Upgrades

Rice-Eccles might be getting another glow up. The football stadium has already undergone some changes, but new improvements are being considered, like adding on-field premium suites, concessions, or box seating. [Salt Lake Tribune]

Biologists Band Hummingbirds For Study

The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources will be banding hummingbirds to study and track them during migration season. While the public demonstration on July 18 is sold out, it might be the perfect time to head to Dutch John, Utah, to catch a glimpse of these tiny guys. [ABC 4]

Utah Speeds Up Deportations

Utah’s immigration court is moving cases faster, leading to more hearings, absences, and deportations. Attorneys are urging their clients to check their case status to stay up to date. [KUER]
