If you’ve been waiting for a break from Utah’s brutal heat, don’t count on it. Forecasters say the heat dome parked over the western United States is expected to stick around all week, which could send weekend temperatures in Salt Lake above 100 degrees again.

WTF is a heat dome? Similar to our winter inversions, a heat dome forms when an area of high atmospheric pressure traps hot air, preventing clouds, rain, and cooler air from developing. [NASA]
Even nighttime doesn’t offer relief: Salt Lake City recorded a low of 86 degrees early Monday morning, setting a new record for the warmest overnight low and breaking the previous record of 82 degrees. [FOX 13]
The grid is under pressure: The U.S. Department of Energy issued an emergency order for 17 states including Utah, allowing the Southwest Power Pool to dispatch backup power if needed to help prevent blackouts during the ongoing heat emergency. The order remains in effect through Aug. 3. [U.S. Department of Energy]
Should Utahns be worried? Not necessarily. The emergency order is designed to prevent outages before they happen. Still, grid operators are asking customers to conserve energy during peak hours, when air-conditioning demand is highest. [City Cast Salt Lake]

Two Utah women are leading what’s being called “the largest American Sign Language translation effort in entertainment history.” Through a partnership between Netflix and Signup Media, Jenni Yang and Jojo Savea are making popular titles like “CoComelon” and “KPop Demon Hunters” more accessible to deaf children. All-Purpose Bakehouse in Salt Lake City will be closed for the next two weeks while they work out some mechanical issues. They’ll reopen on Wednesday, Aug. 12. [Instagram]

Goodbye, Sears Lake

Construction is finally underway at the long-vacant Sears (aka Sears Lake) near downtown Salt Lake City, where Intermountain Health plans to build a new hospital. Crews are cleaning up petroleum-contaminated soil left behind by the store’s former auto shop, with more detailed plans for the project expected later this year.
