| First Up: Utah’s Big Sports Season |
| | Will Utah reign in the NBA and NHL this year? (Angie Treasure/City Cast Salt Lake) |
| Utah sports fans, buckle in! This could be the first season in a while where both of the state’s major pro teams give us something to get excited about. | - The Mammoth came out swinging. Utah opened the NHL season Thursday with a 6-0 win over the Chicago Blackhawks — a team they failed to beat in four tries last season. Dylan Guenther made the first goal, continuing a remarkable streak of scoring the franchise’s first goal in each of its first three seasons. And goalie Karel Vejmelka blocked all 15 shots, securing the first home shutout in Mammoth history. [Deseret News]
- The Jazz might be competitive again. After winning only 22 games last season, the team added No. 2 draft pick Darryn Peterson to a young roster featuring Lauri Markkanen, Keyonte George, Ace Bailey, and former Defensive Player of the Year Jaren Jackson Jr. [NBA]
- Want a sneak peak? Watch the Jazz practice for free today, Oct. 5 at 5 p.m. at the newly renovated Delta Center. The first regular-season home game is Friday, Oct. 23 against the New Orleans Pelicans. [NBA]
- There’s a lot riding on these teams. Lest we forget, the Smith Entertainment Group is pouring billions into its Utah sports empire. The Jazz and Mammoth must stay in Salt Lake City as part of a 30-year agreement that includes up to $900 million in public funding to transform the Delta Center and surrounding area. [Deseret News]

| | | Kids are such natural explorers, so we empower them through our Outdoor Environmental Education (OEE) program. From nearby field trip destinations for Lower School learners to overnight National Park trips for Middle Schoolers, we keep nature journals, ask big questions, and stretch our outdoor skills. McGillis OEE doesn't just teach kids about nature, though; it grows curious, caring stewards who notice and care for the world around them. |

| What Salt Lake's Talking About |
| | Christmas Music, Already? | Utah radio station KLO 103.1 is wasting no time: They switched to all Christmas music on Sept. 28. The station says listeners are already asking for it. [Salt Lake Tribune] | | Look, Ma, No Pilot | A remotely supervised autonomous plane stopped in Salt Lake City last week as part of a more than 5,000-mile cross-country round trip. The visit comes as Utah tests how autonomous and electric aircraft could eventually fit into the state’s broader transportation system. [KPCW] | | Bring Your Event to Life | Do you have big ideas for a community festival? Salt Lake City just opened applications for their 2027 Arts, Culture, and Entertainment Grants, offering $500 to $10,000 to help bring festivals, cultural events, and neighborhood gatherings to life. The deadline to apply is Nov. 1. [Salt Lake City] | | Protecting Airport Wetlands | Salt Lake City International Airport plans to sell nearly 1,000 acres of Great Salt Lake wetlands to the state, which says it can better manage and preserve the habitat. Bird advocates support the conservation but worry the transfer could open more of the land to hunting and are pushing for permanent no-hunting protections. [FOX 13] | | Where To Eat Lunch on the Cheap | Sick of opening your fridge to find only condiments and a parmesan cheese rind for lunch?
