First Up: The U’s Next Decade

The University of Utah, the state’s flagship university with more than 38,000 students and 47,000 employees, has a new master plan. It builds on President Taylor Randall’s “College Town Magic” vision and will guide growth over the next 10 years. Here’s what to expect. [University of Utah]

  • The plan organizes the campus into “districts” for academics, research, health care, athletics, and culture, plus “College Town Magic,” a student village with housing, dining, and gathering spaces. A big goal is making the U less of a commuter school by having more students live on campus. [Salt Lake Tribune]
  • The U is bringing back parking. Expect a roughly 1,500-spot underground garage west of the Huntsman Arena. The school is also extending stops on the campus TRAX line. [Salt Lake Tribune]
  • Seven guiding principles, including advancing academic and research missions and improving patient experience, will inform any projects before construction is approved. [University of Utah]
  • This plan comes amid staffing reductions. As the university juggles growth and an expected enrollment decline, the school plans to lay off as many as 855 operational jobs over the next year. [City Cast Salt Lake 🎧]
