Are there certain foods you consistently crave? For me, it’s big, soft, salty, pretzels (dipped in marinara, if I’m feeling wild). So we asked a self-described soft-pretzel connoisseur for her recommendations. Thanks to Saige Miller, KUER politics reporter, for writing this article.
If I see a soft pretzel on a menu, I’m adding it to my tab nine out of 10 times. Needless to say, I’ve consumed a good amount of the carb-loaded food in my lifetime. So, without further ado, here are my personal favorite soft pretzels that Salt Lake City (and other surrounding areas) have to offer!
Honestly, I went in with low expectations and (literally) ate my words once I took one scrumptious munch of their pretzel bites. What makes these little suckers unique is that they’re made with rye bread. The bread-to-salt ratio was on point. I don’t remember an overwhelming butter taste, either. Just an overall great flavor.
Note: It’s a bar, so you gotta be 21+ to get ‘em. It is dog friendly, though!
This is just a tried-and-true soft pretzel. It comes out hot, buttery, and ready to devour right away. Cheese is extra (I know, blasphemy. They do give a cup-of-soup portion of the cheese, though!). It does come with pretty good mustard. Piper Down also has vegan cheese, so if dairy isn’t your forte, you can still enjoy it.
Note: If you like a mild kick, ask for spicy queso. It’s a bar so only 21+ are allowed inside.
I feel like everyone and their mother knows about this pretzel, and I understand why! It’s a good, hearty pretzel. The bread is soft inside and out, which is a must because no one likes a hard crust with a mushy inside. It’s salted perfectly to my liking. It’s another big fella, so you definitely want to split it with a group, unless you’re feeling ambitious. Beer cheese and various mustards included.
A note: Kid friendly! Bring the whole fam.
OK, I seriously loved this pretzel so much. I got the jalapeño cheddar one (so many options to pick from!), and it was worth every penny. It was spicy, perfectly toasted, and the most rewarding bite. I did not want this eating experience to end. It’s another massive pretzel, but one I truly did not want to share. The cheese is just the standard movie theater nacho cheese, which I personally like, especially with a jalapeño soft pretzel.
Note: Make this a reason to go to the fair next year.
