Special thanks to the SLC Council staff for providing some of the helpful info used in this article.

You see it in the headlines — our city and county leaders are making big decisions that shape our everyday lives (defunding child care AND senior centers?). But what can you actually do about it? Your voice matters, and attending a city or county council meeting is a perfect entry point. Take it a step further by making a public comment. Here’s how.

🗓️ Know When and Where

Salt Lake County Council meetings are every Tuesday, while Salt Lake City Council meetings take place two Tuesdays a month. The public is welcome to attend either in-person or online. If you click below, you’ll find the times, dates, agendas, and where the meeting is taking place. Agendas are usually published at least 24 hours in advance, so you know what’s on the docket.

Mark your calendar: The Salt Lake County Council will vote on the 2026 budget on Tuesday, Dec. 9. It’s a great opportunity to voice your opinion on things like the proposed property tax increase.

🗣️ In-Person Comment

  • Add a personal touch. Start by introducing yourself and share a personal anecdote about why the topic is important to you and why it matters to others in your community.
  • Keep it snappy. In order to allow time for everyone to speak, your comment should be under two minutes. If you’re like me and have a fear of public speaking, I find it helpful to practice and time myself beforehand, and then bring some notes along for reference.
  • Be respectful. Avoid disruptive behavior, discriminatory language, or intimidation tactics.
  • End with a call to action. Suggest specific changes you want to see or offer creative solutions.

🔊 Zoom Comment

Salt Lake City Council:

Register beforehand on the Salt Lake City Council website. When it’s your turn, you’ll be called to speak by a council staffer. If you’re not able to get through all your points, you can email your comment to Council.Comments@slc.gov.

Salt Lake County Council: Access the meeting using the Webex link on the agenda. Add “Resident” before your name to be identified as someone who wants to give a comment.
