Much of the Wasatch Front is bracing for extreme heat this week. So, how high will temperatures rise, and how can you protect yourself from the heat?
☀️ How Hot Will It Get?
The National Weather Service issued Salt Lake City an excessive heat warning from Wednesday, July 10 to Saturday, July 13. We’re expected to see multiple days over 100 degrees this week, with a chance of breaking an all-time record of 107 on Saturday.
☀️ How Can You Protect Yourself?
- Make sure you stay hydrated! Drink several glasses of water throughout the day. Don’t wait until you get thirsty.
- Salt Lake County has designated “Cool Zones” where you can escape the heat. They’re free, air-conditioned, public spaces located in libraries, rec centers, and senior centers.
- Be careful with strenuous activity outside. Take breaks, wear loose, lightweight, and light-colored clothes. Outdoor physical exercise should be limited to early morning or evenings.
- Don’t leave pets or children in the car, even for a short while. Temperatures inside a vehicle can rise quickly and result in deadly consequences.
- Check on older adults and other people with health conditions. Make sure they have proper air-conditioning inside their homes and they’re staying hydrated.
- Utah consistently has the highest rate of skin cancer in the country. Wear sunscreen and continue to reapply every two hours.
- Know the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Both are serious and can lead to illness or death.
