Utah has some truly bizarre places. While you may know about Gilgal Gardens and the Summum Pyramid, did you know there’s a lighthouse in Cedar City? City Cast Salt Lake listener Nycole R. does! She’s one of Salt Lake City’s top Yelp reviewers and wrote in to share her most unusual finds.
📍 Where: Clawson, UT
“Where do I start with this place? We discovered it while looking at Google Maps and saw ‘UFO landing site’ ... of course we had to venture out to see it! From the road, you see various odd metal sculptures just begging you to come take a look. There is not really any signage that explains what we were looking at. After a few minutes … a couple in an old pick up truck drove up the road and stopped to chat with us. Turns out, it is the owner of the property and he was excited for us to come check out the museum.
The museum is really just the couple's living room, stuffed full of antiques and wood carvings. He had a story to tell with each thing and most of them also had a dad joke punch line. Vaughn's a funny fella and is thrilled for the audience. I asked him about the UFO landing site and he cheerfully said that it was a made up story to get people to stop by. It worked!”
📍 Where: Millcreek, UT
“If you own a spa or pool, this place is for you, they have all the supplies and accessories you could imagine. If you don't own a spa, this place is also for you, there are private hot tub rooms you can rent by the hour. Yes, you heard that right, private hourly hot tub rental.
Same-day reservations are accepted, and the earlier you call in the day, the more likely you'll be able to request a specific room. Price is about $15 per person and they also offer soda and water for purchase. When you are in your private room, you can lock the door, dim the lights and relax until your hour is up. We brought a small portable blue tooth speaker to add a little music. Towels are provided, but you can bring your own if you prefer.
As others have said, the outside does not look terribly inviting, but give it a try! You'll be pleasantly surprised.”
📍 Cedar City, UT (obvs)
“Right smack in the middle of landlocked Cedar City you'll find a proud lighthouse. It boasts a sign for the nearby Providence shopping center and stands ready to, um, light the way?
Its paint is fading and the exterior looks like it's seen many years (about 23 now, actually), and could use a little TLC. But as far as lighthouses go, it's the only full-size one you'll find around here. And if California does get swallowed up by the ocean, it will be ready to step in and do its job. Until then, it's a strange beacon to the southern Utah area and stands ready to be called to duty.”
