The federal funding freeze — and its subsequent blocking — last week caused a lot of confusion and concern for many who rely on government aid programs like SNAP. But Utahns should know that SNAP benefits are still available for those in need of food assistance.
What Are SNAP Benefits?
SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program), commonly known as food stamps, help low-income households supplement their grocery costs. Benefits are loaded onto an EBT card, which works like a debit card, and can be used at authorized retailers. The amount you receive each month is based on your gross income and household size. SNAP food purchases are not charged sales tax.
Unexpected Places You Can Use SNAP
- The Farmers Market. Over 20 farmers markets in Utah accept SNAP benefits. Through the Double Up Food Bucks program, they’ll match dollar-for-dollar up to $30. Including the SLC Winter Market.
- Museums for All. Enjoy free or discounted admission to more than 1,400 museums nationwide. Local participants include the Loveland Living Planet Aquarium, Tracy Aviary, Natural History Museum of Utah, and the Utah Museum of Fine Arts.
