The arrival of fall means comfort food, seasonal flavors, and warm bowls of soups, stews, and curries. Here are some of the best autumn foods to try in Salt Lake.
Eat
- Shanasheel Grill. A Hey Salt Lake reader recommended their delicious eggplant stew served with rice.
- Gourmandise. A much-loved Salt Lake establishment, I’m coming here in the fall for the French country stew or the classic tomato basil soup (with a brie bacon grilled cheese for dipping, of course).
- Mi La-Cai Noodle House. When it’s cold out, all I want to do is dive into a big bowl of pho. Mi La-Cai has been a long time favorite. I highly recommend getting a side of crispy Vietnamese egg rolls, they’re to-die-for!
Drink
No disrespect to the PSL community, but can we make chai the new fall favorite? You still get those warming spices, but it’s more complex in flavor. Try the chai at IndieGo Coffee and pair it with one of their samosa puffs. Personally, I love a good dirty chai and the one at Bonnie & Clydes is not too sweet.
Lightning Round
- 🥧 Pie: I always appreciate Pie Party’s unique flavors. I tried their beet and goat cheese pie recently and it was top notch. They’re opening a storefront in Millcreek in September, but in the meantime pick up a pie or some of their other baked goods at the Downtown farmers market.
- 🎃 PSL: If you must PSL, head to your favorite local coffee shop for their fall creations. Culture Coffee is coming out with a pumpkin lolo caramel coffee which is made with coconut — a must try!
- ☕ Hot Chocolate: Head to the source at Hatch Family Chocolates for your cup of cocoa, a rich and oh so decadent treat.
In the News
I was sad to hear that Star of India was forced to close due to a power loss and structural damage to the building. They’re now looking for a temporary location. I’m looking forward to their reopening; they have some of the best Indian food in Salt Lake City.
