BIPOC Recreationists‘ Stories at Liberty Park

00:00:00

June is for outdoor movies, and this Friday, June 28, is the Wild & Scenic Film Festival. It’s hosted by Salt Lake-based advocate Outdoor Auntie and the Utah Film Center’s Black, Bold & Brilliant program.

Wild & Scenic Film Festival

The Wild & Scenic Festival inspires activism through film. They partner with local groups and organizations to support grassroot environmental causes worldwide, with around 120 events every year.

The Utah event celebrates diverse outdoor experiences by highlighting the stories of BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, people of color), people with disabilities, and the LGBTQ+ community. It will feature a lineup of short films, taking place under the stars, at the Tracy Aviary.

Here are more event deets:

  • Tickets are $15.
  • BYO blankets or low-back lawn chairs
  • There will be food and drinks available for purchase.
  • Doors open at 7:30 p.m., film will start at dusk (around 9:15 p.m.).

Outdoor Auntie

Ashley Cleveland of Outdoor Auntie is a passionate advocate for community and making the outdoors more accessible and inclusive. She’s an ecologist, city planner, and civic engagement consultant who’s worked with the Salt Lake chapter of Outdoor Afro, Tracy Aviary, and the Utah Office of Outdoor Recreation.

Black, Bold & Brilliant

The Black, Bold & Brilliant series is housed under the Utah Film Center. It focuses on representation through film with events and discussions led by Black Utahns. All are encouraged to attend as a way to engage with and learn about the Black experience.
