Despite unseasonably warm temperatures, it’s still winter in Salt Lake. Here are a few activities you can do to embrace that winter feeling, even without snow in the valley.
Head Out on a Sleigh Ride
Ride a horse-drawn sleigh or wagon among majestic herds of elk at The Hardware Wildlife Education Center in northern Utah. Sleigh rides are open Fridays through Sundays until Feb. 15.
Lace Up for Ice Skating
Outdoor ice skating rinks can stay open, even when it’s a little toasty, thanks to science! Once the rink has built up a proper first layer (thanks to cold air and efficient chillers), the Zamboni can continue to build up the ice thickness throughout the season. Find a rink near you:
If you’re a little shaky on the ice, Gallivan Center is offering skating lessons every Thursday in January.
Soak in a Hot Spring
When there’s a chill in the air, warm up at a natural hot spring. We have so many great ones nearby, including: Homestead Crater (avoid if you have Thalassophobia) and Crystal Hot Springs in northern Utah, Fifth Water Hot Springs in central Utah, and Mystic Hot Springs in southern Utah.
Chase Snow in the Mountains
It may be dry in the valley, but there’s plenty of snow in our mountains (even if some of it’s supplemented). Hit the ski slopes for “the greatest snow on earth,” grab a sled or tube for a thrilling adventure, or strap on snowshoes for something more mellow. If sports aren’t your thing, stay cozy at a resort with a cup of hot chocolate.
Try Your Hand at Birding
Birding really hits different in the winter. Many species either stay put or migrate to Utah for the season, and it’s the best time to spot eagles. Check out a list of winter birding hotspots from the Great Salt Lake Audubon.
