Enjoy the warm weather with a leisurely stroll around Liberty Park and see what flora and fauna are there to discover.
Tracy Aviary
The Tracy Aviary is home to over 300 birds, many of which are endangered. There’s so much to do and see there (bird shows, botanical gardens, events), and they’re open year-round.
Trees
Salt Lake City has a handy map that identifies the species of local trees. There are several different varieties in Liberty Park including pine, cottonwood, and elm.
Greenhouse
Inside the Liberty Park greenhouse is the Parks and Public Lands’ Native Plant Restoration Project. They have hundreds of “Wetland-in-a-Box” native plant kits cultivated with hand-collected seeds from different parts of the region that will be planted in designated restoration sites.
Birds of a Feather
The Tracy Aviary isn’t the only place you can spot birds. Of course, ducks and geese are aplenty, but keep your eye out for one bird of prey in particular: the bald eagle. February is bald eagle season in Utah, when they leave the cold of the north in search of food. Often, you’ll spot one or two hanging out in the trees.
Pond
Spend an afternoon near the pond. You might see cattails, a bold jumping spider, or a pond slider turtle. You can record your observations on iNaturalist, which helps track biodiversity around the world.
