There are 18 confirmed species of bats in Utah. During the summer months, they are especially active and it’s more likely you’ll find them in your house. This is when baby bats, aka pups, are learning to fly and leaving their roost. If you find one in your home, here’s what to do according to Wild Aware Utah:

  • Don’t swat at it! Wait for it to land.
  • Always wear thick gloves.
  • Open a door or window to allow the bat to escape on its own.
  • If it lands within reach, cover it with a towel to carry outside.
  • If it’s on the wall, place a small container over it and slide a piece of cardboard over the opening.
  • Take the bat outside and release it on a tree or other high object.
  • Don’t leave it in the container. It will have trouble climbing out.
  • If you find a small bat family – call a professional aka wildlife nuisance control company.
  • If bitten, seek medical treatment immediately. Wash the wound with soap and water and call your doctor and the local health department.
