Avalanches are one of the deadliest natural disasters in Utah, and they’re most likely to occur between January and April. Here are some tips to stay safe while you’re outdoors this season.
The more you know
- Wind is the most common cause of avalanches.
- They are more likely to occur on slopes of 30 degrees or more.
- Refer to the Utah Avalanche Center for current conditions.
- Beware of the “whump.” Listen for this sound while you walk; it could mean settling snow underfoot that might release a slab.

- Cracks in the snow around your feet
- If the ground feels hollow
- A rapid rise in temperature
- Heavy snowfall or rain within the last 24 hours
