Antelope Island is a Utah state park that expands over 28,000 acres. It’s the largest island in the Great Salt Lake with truly spectacular views. Many flock there during the warmer months to see pronghorn antelopes and bison, but beware of the bugs. Here, we rank the creepy crawlies of Antelope Island on how annoying they are.
Scale
🦟= mildly annoying
🦟🦟🦟🦟🦟= incredibly annoying
Brine Flies
Rating: 🦟
They mostly stay by the shoreline and don’t head toward land until early summer-fall. They’re also harmless and move out of the way when approached. Very courteous.
Mosquitoes
Rating: 🦟🦟🦟🦟
Protect yourself before you wreck yourself: Don’t forget to wear your repellant. Positive cases of West Nile Virus have been detected in Davis County.
Midges
Rating: 🦟🦟
While non-biting, these pesky flies are everywhere. They travel in large groups that resemble columns or tornadoes (fly-nadoes). I don’t know about you, but that’s nightmare fuel to me.
Biting Gnats
Rating: 🦟🦟🦟🦟🦟
Also known as no-see-ums, these little biting buggers normally come out between April-June. Your best line of protection is long pants and sleeves and a fine mesh head net. They are unphased by insect repellent.
