The City Cast Salt Lake team goes nuts for squirrels. There are a couple different native species in Utah. Here’s how to identify them:
American Red Squirrel
- Small in size, about 12-16 inches long.
- Backs are a dark reddish-brown color and underside is creamy white.
- Less bushy tails.
- This is what they sound like.

Rock squirrel, Otospermophilus variegatus. (Natural History Museum of Utah)
Rock Squirrel
- Larger than the American Red and about the same size as the Eastern Fox.
- Tails are long and only a little bushy.
- They mostly stick to the ground.
- This is what they sound like.
