Urban Almanac: Squirrels

The City Cast Salt Lake team goes nuts for squirrels. There are a couple different native species in Utah. Here’s how to identify them:

American Red Squirrel

  • Small in size, about 12-16 inches long.
  • Backs are a dark reddish-brown color and underside is creamy white.
  • Less bushy tails.
  • This is what they sound like.

Rock Squirrel

  • Larger than the American Red and about the same size as the Eastern Fox.
  • Tails are long and only a little bushy.
  • They mostly stick to the ground.
  • This is what they sound like.
