The 2025 Sundance Film Festival begins next week, and while the future of Sundance in Utah is uncertain, we’re enjoying it while we can. With such a stellar lineup (that includes nearly 90 films!), it’s impossible to truly pick the “best,” but here are some highlights.

Hot tip: Don’t be deterred if a screening is sold out. You can join the waitlist to your desired screening on the website or mobile app. Arrive at the venue at least 30 minutes early for a chance to get tickets.

Most Anticipated

  • “Opus” — A young journalist is drawn into the world of a reclusive pop-star who’s plotting a comeback after 30 years of being MIA. It stars Ayo Edebiri of “The Bear” and “Bottoms.”
  • “Atropia” — An aspiring actress and a soldier, cast in a military role-playing facility, unexpectedly fall in love. It stars Alia Shawkat of “Search Party” and “Arrested Development.”
  • “Jimpa” — A visit to Amsterdam forces a mother to reevaluate her parenting as her nonbinary teenager bonds with their gay grandfather. It stars Oliva Colman of “The Favourite“ and John Lithgow of “3rd Rock from the Sun.”

Free Local Screenings

  • “Omaha” — Wednesday, Jan. 29 at 6:15 p.m. — A cross-country road trip with a dad and his two kids after a family tragedy. The director, Cole Webley, lives in Utah and most of the film was shot in Salt Lake City. It stars John Magaro of “Past Lives” and “Orange Is the New Black.”
  • “Deaf President Now!” — Thursday, Jan. 30 at 4:30 p.m. — A documentary about the 1988 student-led protests at Gaulladet University (the world’s only deaf university), demanding deaf representation in leadership positions at the school.
  • Best of Fest Film — Sunday, Feb. 2 at 3 p.m. or 5:30 p.m. — Two screenings of festival favorites.
