Black History Month is well underway, and despite federal and state-level efforts to rollback diversity, equity, and inclusion, it’s important to celebrate Black history in February and all year long. Because Black history in Utah is Utah history. Here’s how to participate around Salt Lake.
Black History Month Events
- Attend the opening reception of Unbreakable Bonds: Discovering Resilience & Identity at FICE Gallery, today, Feb. 7 from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m.
- Network with other Black-owned businesses at the Coffee & Culture Meetup on Feb. 11 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.
- Visit the Black History Pop-Up Exhibition at The Leonardo from Feb. 8 to March 16. The opening reception is Thursday, Feb. 13 at 6:30 p.m.
- Request the Utah Black History Museum bus, a mobile exhibit that highlights the people and stories that have shaped Utah’s Black community.
- Support Black-owned businesses at Strength in Shades Black Owned Makers Market on Feb. 21 at Studio on Main in Lehi.
- Take a class on Black History & Cocktails on Thursday, Feb. 27 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
- Watch Black and Dating in Salt Lake City, Season 1 (they’re currently filming Season 2!).
Organizations To Follow
- Our Sundays is a community organization that curates events especially for Black people in Utah.
- Curly Me is a nonprofit organization that empowers Black girls ages five to 14.
- The Utah Black Chamber provides networking and resources for Black-owned businesses in Utah.
- Utah Black Artists Collective (UBLAC) amplifies the work of Black artists.
