December is arguably one of the most expensive months of the year, with gift shopping and traveling. But there are still ways to enjoy the holiday season without breaking the bank. Here are some inexpensive ideas.

Every year, the Grand America goes hard for Christmas with their winter displays — they even map out the stroll for you. Walking through their hotel always makes me feel like Kevin in “Home Alone.”

Stroll though to see this year’s display, “Yeti for the Holidays,” and peep the giant gingerbread house.

Do some people-watching at the Gallivan Center. See the winter lights and ice skating happening at one of the best projects to come out of the 2002 Winter Olympics — the Glow Garden! If you’re feeling adventurous, rent some skates for $14 and get in the rink!

Pack a winter picnic and head down to Draper to see the Tree of Life, and Santa! Bundle up to see all 3 million lights, which kick on just after 6 p.m. Check out the free holiday market while you’re there.

Cottages covered in snow and lights.

With over 50 cottages to admire, which one will make your wishlist? (Odgen’s Christmas Village)

Walk through Ogden’s Christmas Village imagining Santa’s cottages in the North Pole. Grab a hot cocoa, see the beautiful little decorated houses, and vote for your favorite one. While you’re there check out historic Main Street, recently named one of the best Main Streets in the U.S.

This German-inspired Christmas market is sure to make you forget you’re in Utah. Come see their St. Nikolaus Parade on Friday, Dec. 6 at 6 p.m. Fun activities include a petting zoo, local vendors, and Christmas carolers. Pro-tip: Come hungry for sweet treats.
