Despite warmer-than-average temperatures this past week, the forecast ahead shows it cooling down a bit. You know what that means — it’s soup time! If your rainy day routine also includes hot broth, then here are some of the best in Salt Lake.
La-Cai Noodle House
Try the pho at La-Cai Noodle House. The flavor is complex and filling and I love adding lots of lime, thai basil, and chili sauce.
Freshie’s
Chow down on the clam chowder at Freshie’s Lobster Co. (sorry to all the lactose-intolerant hotties out there). There’s something so simple yet satisfying about it.
Harmons
You’re at the store anyway, so pick up a container of tomato basil soup at Harmons Grocery. It’s oh so creamy and decadent. While you’re at it, grab a baguette for dipping and a fun drink, and call yourself a romantic!
Victor’s Restaurant
Nestled inside a tire shop (talk about convenience) in Glendale is Victor’s Restaurant. When you’re in the mood for a comforting bowl, order the pozole, which is a rich, brothy, soup made with hominy. Save room for tamales, too.
Eva’s Bakery
If you haven’t yet, try the French onion soup at Eva’s Bakery. Let me tell you, this thing is chock full of luscious caramelized onions. And the “pièce de résistance" is the toasty, cheesy bread on top (can you say satisfying cheese pull?).
We had Gastronomic SLC founder Stuart Melling on City Cast Salt Lake and he shared his favorite soups. Plus, a hot tip:
Phở 777 & Phở 33
“Top of my list would be Phở 777 in West Valley. The pho is pretty much the best in town. It is really, really exceptional. But, a very close second is Phở 33. That's in South Salt Lake. 777 is more herbaceous, lighter, where 33's is fattier, more of a big, heavier mouthfeel, so it kind of depends [on] which direction. But if you have a cold, can you beat pho?”
“[Phở] 33 have an exceptional ... secret little chili spice they have behind the kitchen counter. You just have to ask for it.”
