If your driver’s license has a star in the upper-right-hand corner, it’s REAL ID compliant. If it doesn’t, time is ticking to get up to date! (Utah Department of Public Safety)

I know the DLD isn’t everyone’s favorite place to hang out, but if you haven’t updated your Utah driver license to a REAL ID, it’s time to make that appointment. After years of delays, the Department of Homeland Security will require an enhanced form of identification called “REAL ID” to get through airport security beginning May 7, 2025.

🪪 What is REAL ID?

Waaay back in 2005, Congress passed the REAL ID Act to increase air travel security post 9/11. The law set minimum requirements for identification presented to TSA for domestic flights — like a driver license or personal identification card. REAL ID also includes a gold star and a barcode that’s difficult to counterfeit.

🤔 Do I Need a REAL ID?

The good news: Utah has been making all new ID cards and driver licenses REAL ID-compliant since 2019, so there’s a good chance you already have one and might not realize it — if there is a star in the upper-right of your ID, you’re all set!

If not, you will need to update to a REAL ID if you want to board a domestic flight or enter military bases, nuclear facilities, and/or some federal offices. However, valid passports will still be accepted.

☑️ How to Get a REAL ID in Utah

If you have a current Utah ID or driver license, you can renew it online. All new IDs will be REAL ID-compliant, so you don’t need to do anything beyond the normal renewal process. The gold star will also be reflected on your digital license if you use the Utah Mobile Driver License Program.

If your legal name has recently changed or this is your first time getting a Utah ID, you’ll need to make an appointment. Here’s a helpful checklist of what you’ll need to bring with you. Note that all documents must be originals; photocopies are not accepted.
