Utah’s Primary Election Day is Tuesday, June 25. Republican candidates are in heated primaries for key statewide races, including governor, U.S. Senator, and three of four congressional districts. In Salt Lake County, Democrats are in tight primary races for a number of seats in the Utah Legislature and one on the Salt Lake County Council. Here’s what you should know.
🗳 Important Dates
- June 14 is the deadline to register to vote and receive a mail-in ballot. If you miss it, you can still register in person at an early voting site or polling location on Election Day (it’s a cool Utah exception). Make sure to bring two forms of identification!
- June 18 is the last day to request a mail-in ballot.
- June 24 is the last day to postmark your mail-in ballot.
- June 25 is Election Day.
🗳 Who Can Vote
- Republican primary: Only registered Republicans can vote in the Republican primary.
- Democratic primary: Anyone can vote in the Democratic primary; you don’t need to be registered as a Democrat. You just need to request a Democratic ballot.
- Unaffiliated voters: You can affiliate (register as a Republican or Democrat) at any time.
Note: If you’re a registered Democrat or Republican, you cannot change your party affiliation at this point.
🗳 An Update To Your Ballot
You may have noticed a change in your ballot packet. The envelopes no longer include a paper security sleeve. This was done to save on costs and to make processing more efficient. Don’t worry, though: Your ballot will remain confidential because there’s red security printing inside the return envelope.
🗳 Voting Options
- Vote in person. Find an early voting center or Election Day polling location near you.
- Mail in or drop off your ballot. If you drop off your ballot, the deadline is 8 p.m. on Election Day at a ballot drop box location. If you mail it, make sure it’s postmarked by June 24.
