While this season hasn’t been too snowy so far, as Utah drivers, we need this gentle reminder to drive safely this winter (and all year long, let’s be real).
Winterize Your Car
- Check your antifreeze levels to ensure your engine doesn’t freeze over on cold days.
- How’s the pressure and tread of your tires? A lot of gas stations have pressure gauge stations. Generally, it should be around 30-35 psi, but your owner’s manual will have the recommended tire pressure for your specific car. Try the quarter test to measure your tread. If you can put a quarter upside down between your tread and you can see the top of George’s head, it’s time to get new tires.
- Check your oil, windshield washer fluid, and battery — for safety!
Be Prepared
- Not to get all “prepper” on you, but do you have a winter kit in your car? It should have essentials like a window scraper, first aid kit, flashlight, blankets, gloves, water, non-perishable snacks, and jumper cables.
Drive Carefully
- This seems obvious, but drive slow when the roads are wet, snowy, or icy (be aware of black ice).
- If you start sliding, take your foot off the accelerator and the brake, turn into the slide, and don’t overcorrect (move the wheel very slightly).
- Maintain plenty of space between yourself and other cars, especially snow plows.
