April is when we’re itching to commune with Mother Nature. Or at the very least soak in some vitamin D. Here are some ways to celebrate the Earth and get outside this month.
Return of Patio Dining
If it’s not April shower-ing (or snow-ering?), then take advantage of the sun by sitting on a patio somewhere. Every year, Salt Lake County puts out a list of approved dog-friendly patios.
Solar Eclipse
There’s another solar eclipse happening on Monday, April 8. While we’re not in the path of totality this time, Utah still gets a partial eclipse. The best time for viewing is 12:32 p.m. but keep your eyes on the sky (with solar eclipse-approved glasses, please!) anytime between 11:25 a.m.-1:41 p.m.
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
The University of Utah hosts a drive-up recycling day on Friday, April 19 from 7 a.m.- 3 p.m. Bring all your hard-to-recycle items like electronics, furniture, tax docs to shred, and expired medicine.
Tree Hugger
Arbor Day (Friday, April 26) at Red Butte Garden is a must. Admission is free, plus each family gets to choose a complimentary tree seedling (White Mulberry, Hawthorne, or Burr Oak) to take home while supplies last. Just make sure you have somewhere to grow it!
Bike Ride Clean-Up
Take a bike ride to the Jordan River Trail and help remove trash and invasive plants. Afterward, enjoy an Earth Day celebration at the Tracy Aviary’s Jordan River location.
