This month, I’m trying to recreate the summers of my childhood: Exploring and spending the whole day outside. We’ve got a nature-packed guide to July for you with some of the best things to do in Salt Lake.
🌼 Wildflowers
The wildflowers are in bloom, and the Wasatch Wildflower Festival is happening at various locations throughout the month. But remember: Don’t pick the wildflowers! Look for these varieties out on the trails:
- Brokenleaf paintbrush. This vibrant-red beauty is most commonly found at higher elevations.
- Wallflower. Who knew wallflowers are real flowers, not just something people call me at social gatherings.
- Aspen bluebells. If I look at a bluebell I’m singing this song in my head.
🔥 Wildfire
July is prime wildfire season in Utah and Smokey Bear says, “Only you can prevent wildfires.” According to the U.S. Forest Service, Utah has already seen more than double the amount of fires than this time last year. Campfires are a common culprit of human-caused wildfires. Here are some tips to keep in mind at your next bonfire:
- Never start a fire when it’s super windy, and never leave a fire unattended.
- Remember “douse, stir, check, repeat” when extinguishing a fire. Douse with water, stir with a stick or shovel, safely check that the coals are cold to the touch, and repeat if necessary.
- Fireworks are prohibited in certain areas around Salt Lake County. Check out the fireworks restrictions map.
- Check Utah Fire Info to learn about statewide fire restrictions.
🕷️ Spider Fest
🚨PSA: Skip this section if you have arachnophobia.
You don’t have to wait until October for the creepy crawlies to emerge. The annual Antelope Island Spider Fest is happening on Saturday, July 27. It’s a fun, family-friendly event to learn about the eight-legged creatures that inhabit Antelope Island.
🧘 Outdoor Yoga
Summer means going outside as much as possible. Do you know about all the free yoga classes happening around town?
- Wasatch mountains. Alta Community Enhancement hosts yoga every Monday in July at 5:30 p.m. at Alta Peruvian Lodge.
- The Capitol. Select Wednesdays at 7 p.m. you can stretch it out at The Capitol.
- Valley Fair Mall. It’s not just for shopping; every Wednesday from 6-7 p.m. they host a community yoga class.
