How do you approach January? Are you all “new year, new me” or are you looking to reset and relax? On a recent episode of City Cast Salt Lake, host Ali Vallarta and producer Ivana Martinez shared some of the best things to do this month.

Your Guide to January in Salt Lake

For the Serial Hobbyists

I’ve made it a personal goal this year to keep trying a hobby until it sticks (shoutout to all my peeps with ADHD). Some things on my list are SLC Boxing Club, fly fishing/ice fishing, Salt Lake Sewciety, woodworking, and knitting.

Ali says, “Salt Lake City School District offers classes ranging from instruments to arts to languages and specific games (like mahjong!) at the three different high schools: East, Highland, and West. They range from four to six weeks, some of them are just a one-day workshop.

For the Self Care Enthusiasts

I’m always down for getting a massage and my nails done, but this month I want to try cupping and acupuncture. Do you have any recs?

Ali says, “I recently learned that Cottonwood Heights Rec Center has a sauna. Their indoor pools are currently closed, but their sauna is open right now. It's $6 to get a day pass. So you could make a day of it, like, you could go work out if you want or take a fitness class first, or you can just spend $6 and go in there and steam your heart out.”

Ivana says, “Self care for me looks like connecting with a lot of my friends. We do the classic, catching up with friends over dinner, and that is like the standard go-to, but I think it would be so fun to do a sleepover as adults. And I don't know why we don't do them more. I'm gonna try to throw a couple of those and then do the classic nails and spa treatments and whatnot.”

For the Swifties

Ali says, “I think as adults we underutilize [the Clark Planetarium], especially given that it is a Salt Lake County-owned facility, and therefore partially funded by our tax dollars. We should feel more ownership over our planetarium. They're doing a Taylor Swift laser show — my understanding is that it's a laser show choreographed to Taylor Swift music.”

What are you looking forward to in January?
