We asked recently about your favorite Salt Lake spots for vegan food and you delivered. Here’s some of what you suggested plus some two cents from me (a non-vegan lover of food).
🥪 Lunch
Buds is beloved by many for a reason, their sandwiches can’t be beat.
“They make all their proteins in-house. Their Italian cold cut sandwich is *chefs kiss* and so is their lavender lemonade. A wonderful casual spot with an outdoor patio.” — Mary G.
“I literally cannot emphasize how much I love Buds. When people I know come to Salt Lake it is the one, across-the-board, must-hit spot in town.” — Esther M.
🍣 Sushi
Two reader recs for sushi were Keyaki and Veggie House. What’s cool about Veggie House is they use soy tuna and soy salmon for some of their rolls, so you get that authentic sushi texture without the fish. The veggie hand rolls at Keyaki consist of either inari tofu or mushrooms combined with fresh veggies.
🍜 Vietnamese
A marker of a good vegan restaurant is being able to take non-vegan friends without them suspecting a thing (scammers gonna scam).
“In the Rose Park area near the Smith’s there’s a restaurant called All Chay that’s Vietnamese. I’m not vegan and I didn’t even know it was when I first tried it, it was so good!” — Rachel R.
🍖 BBQ
Blatch’s Backyard BBQ is a vegan BBQ place. While that may sound like an oxymoron, don’t knock it ‘till you try it. Another good place for vegan meat alternatives is Vegan Daddy Meats, Salt Lake City’s only plant-based butcher shop.
🇪🇹 Ethiopian
“The two Ethiopian restaurants in SLC (Mahider Ethiopian Restaurant and Oromian Restaurant) both offer a veggie combo that is totally vegan and really affordable for a good amount of food — we always have leftovers.” — Emily G.
“Mahider and Oromian Restaurant! The veggie samplers are 👌 I had some vegan friends visit from out of town and they called our selection of Ethiopian restaurants an ‘embarrassment of riches!’” — Lila L.
🧁 Bakery/Cafe
Passion Flour has delicious brunch and pastries. Random, but I love the potatoes here. They’re perfectly cooked and seasoned and I could eat a whole vat of them.
“Sweet Hazel & Co. is my favorite by far! It has a welcoming & inclusive environment, tons of delicious food to dine in or stock up for later, desserts, and their amazing candy!” — Valerie Y.
