As the 2026 Winter Olympics kicks off, Salt Lake City is already looking forward to hosting the 2034 Games. And while this isn’t our first rodeo, here are some Winter Olympic sports you may not know about.

Skimo

The newest sport at the Winter Olympics, otherwise known as ski mountaineering, is a true test of endurance. Athletes must race uphill (using special climbing skis) and then ski downhill across alpine terrain.

Nordic Combined

This two-in-one event pairs ski jumping with cross-country skiing, and it’s the only Winter Olympic sport not open to women.

Curling

A very strategy-forward sport, almost like chess on ice. Teams slide heavy granite stones on the ice while teammates frantically sweep in front of them to control the speed and direction.

Skeleton

Athletes race headfirst down an icy track on a tiny sled, reaching speeds up to 85 mph. Even crazier, there’s no steering wheel, no brakes, just vibes.

Fun fact: After 54 years, skeleton made a triumphant return at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City.
