As we inch closer to fall, it’s a great time of year to plan a trip to southern Utah. Have you explored the town of Boulder? It’s only a hop, skip, and jump away from Capitol Reef National Park, a very underrated destination. Here are some other must-see spots while you’re there.
Find Boulder Bread inside of Hills & Hollows Market, a mini mart/convenience store chock full of local goods. There’s always something new to try at this micro bakery. Some of their latest creations include espresso-smoked salt brownies, raspberry and mulled wine sourdoughnuts, and brown-butter-toasted-sesame rice krispie treats.
You’re at Hills & Hollows, anyway, so head over to Wild Indigo Cafe. They’re serving up cardamom waffles with whipped brown sugar butter, dosadillas (like a quesadilla but made with dosas) with fennel yogurt, and hot dogs with a mango chutney mustard.
Take a scenic drive along Hell’s Backbone Road, connecting Boulder Mountain to the canyons of the Escalante River. The 38-mile stretch crosses the “hogsback,” a stomach-churning steep and narrow section. On this path, you’ll also cross the historic wooden bridge.
Speaking of, you must treat yourself to Hell’s Backbone Grill, a James Beard-nominated restaurant that’s been around for over two decades. They specialize in organic, seasonal, and locally produced cuisine.
Stay inside a house carved inside a giant sandstone. It’s conveniently situated in Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. A truly unique experience if you really want to be one with nature (there’s no Wi-Fi, and cell service is spotty!).
What city should we explore next?
