Today’s neighborhood guide was brought to you by Salt Lake Tribune’s Utah Jazz beat reporter and friend of the pod Andy Larsen.
Places To Grab Lunch
Bruges
The Bruges in Sugar House is superior to their locations downtown (or airport) for two main reasons: indoor seating and Belgian beer. Love rotating between their Croques Madame (ham and three cheeses), Monsieur (add egg), and Hawaii (add pineapple?!).
Millie's Burgers
It's exactly the same burger joint it was in 1980 — and for that, we love it. Burgers? Fine to pretty good. Frozen treats? Better. Random side dishes from fried zucchini to English chips? Give them a try!
Charlotte Rose BBQ
All the way on 33rd, but the lunch specials here are great value and the BBQ is more than good enough for Utah standards.
Places To Buy a Book (or Eight)
Central Book Exchange
A tiny book store with a creative point system that turns your currently owned books into discounts on books they have in stock, new or used.
Melissa's Books and Gifts
What appears to be a former auto shop turned into a book store — it's much, much larger than it looks from the outside. What a great place to turn your head and look at book spines for hours.
Place To Play Pickup Ultimate Frisbee
Upper fields of Sugar House Park
Pickup game on Saturdays, 10 a.m. during any semi-reasonable frisbeeing conditions.
Places to Eat Pizza
Rusted Sun
The best calzones in the valley. Tiny. Feels like home.
Pizza Volta
Just opened in the old Mellow Mushroom space, but they brightened it way up. I kind of hate what they did with the interior, but the pizza is quite good, and they have an extensive beer selection. Seemingly, no one has discovered that they're open yet.
Flatbread Neapolitan Pizzeria.
Of the pizzas in Sugar House, I think they have the best Bianco option.
Level Crossing
As good as the more expensive pizzas up the street, but with Chris Detrick's delicious brews to boot.
